Frequently asked questions!?

What is a CSCS card?

A CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card proves that you have the required training and qualifications to work safely on a construction site in the UK.

Why is the CSCS card mandatory?

Because most employers require proof that workers are trained and aware of health and safety regulations. Without a valid CSCS card, you may be denied access to construction sites.

What is an NVQ?

An NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) is a practical qualification recognised across the UK that proves your professional skills and competence in a specific trade, based on workplace assessment.

How are NVQ and CSCS connected?

To get a permanent CSCS card (Blue, Gold, or Black), you must hold a relevant NVQ for your trade. Without it, you can only apply for a temporary Red card.

What types of CSCS cards exist?
  • Green Card – Labourer

  • Blue Card – Skilled Worker (NVQ Level 2)

  • Gold Card – Advanced/Supervisor (NVQ Level 3–4)

  • Black Card – Manager (NVQ Level 5–7)

  • Red Card – Temporary card while completing your NVQ

How can I apply for a CSCS card?

You must pass the Health, Safety & Environment Test, hold a recognised qualification (or NVQ), and apply on the official CSCS website or through an approved training centre.

What is the Health, Safety & Environment Test?

It’s a 50-question multiple-choice test that checks your understanding of health, safety, and environmental practices on construction sites. It’s mandatory for all CSCS cards.

How long does the CSCS test take?

The test lasts 45 minutes, and you must score at least 45 out of 50 to pass.

How long is the CSCS card valid?

All CSCS cards are valid for 5 years, after which you must renew them by retaking the Health & Safety test.

What is a Red CSCS card?

A temporary card issued to workers who are currently gaining experience or completing their NVQ. It’s valid for 6–12 months.
Attention, you cannot obtain the temporary card if you do not already have CSCS Labourer LVL 1 (Green Card).

How can I check if a CSCS card is valid?

You can verify a card online on the CSCS website by entering the card number or the worker’s name.

What is GQA Qualifications?

GQA is an official awarding body that provides accredited NVQs recognised by CSCS and accepted on all UK construction sites.

What if I have no experience or qualifications?

You can start with a Green CSCS Labourer Card after completing a short Health & Safety course. Later, you can progress to NVQ Level 2 and higher cards.

Is the CSCS test available in other languages?

The test is only available in English, but some centres may provide additional support for non-native speakers.

What happens if I fail the Health & Safety test?

You can retake the test after 48 hours. There is no limit to the number of attempts, but each test must be paid for separately.
